How the Tanzania eVisa Works
Almost every nationality applies the same way: online, before departure, through the official Tanzania Immigration eVisa portal. Processing typically takes 5–10 business days, so we recommend applying at least 2–3 weeks before you travel. You'll need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates with at least one blank visa page, a passport photo, and proof of a return or onward ticket — immigration officers can ask to see this on arrival.
Visa for US Citizens
US citizens are in an unusual position: instead of a short single-entry visa, Tanzania issues Americans a reciprocal one-year, multiple-entry visa for around $100. That means if you're combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a return trip, or planning to revisit within the year, one application covers you. Apply online through the official eVisa portal — do not rely on getting this on arrival.
Visa for UK & European Citizens
UK and most European citizens need a visa, typically around $50 for a single-entry visa or $100 for multiple entry. As with all nationalities, apply through the official eVisa portal before departure — approval in hand is far more reliable than hoping for smooth processing at Kilimanjaro or Julius Nyerere International Airport.
Visa for Indian Citizens
Indian citizens require an eVisa, applied for the same way through the official portal. Fees and validity periods are set by Tanzania Immigration and can change, so confirm the current fee at application time rather than relying on older blog posts (including this one) for the exact number.
Visa for Chinese Citizens
Chinese citizens also require an eVisa. Applications from some nationalities, including China, can go through an additional referral review step, which may extend processing time — another reason to apply well ahead of your travel dates rather than close to departure.
