Overshadowed by the fame of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park is often left off first-time safari itineraries — which is a mistake. During the dry season, Tarangire boasts the highest concentration of elephants anywhere in Tanzania, with herds numbering in the hundreds gathering along the Tarangire River.
Why the Elephants Gather Here
Tarangire's name comes from the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source for miles in every direction once the rains stop. From roughly June through October, as seasonal water sources across the wider ecosystem dry up, elephants migrate into the park from as far as Amboseli in Kenya, converging on the riverbanks in some of the largest elephant gatherings on the continent.
Beneath the dry riverbed itself lies an underground water table, and elephants are known to dig with their tusks and trunks to reach it — a behavior rarely witnessed as clearly as it is here.
The Baobab Woodlands
Tarangire is equally famous for its ancient baobab trees, some estimated to be well over a thousand years old, scattered across golden savanna in a landscape that feels distinctly different from the open plains of the Serengeti. Elephants strip baobab bark for its moisture content during the driest months, and the trees' swollen, water-storing trunks make them a striking centerpiece of nearly every photograph taken in the park.
More Than Just Elephants
While elephants are the headline attraction, Tarangire also supports an unusually high diversity of breeding bird species (over 550 recorded) and healthy populations of lion, leopard, and the localized fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk, both rarely seen elsewhere in northern Tanzania.
When to Visit
Visit during the dry season (June to October) for the largest elephant gatherings and the most reliable game viewing overall. In the wet season (November to May), the elephants disperse across the wider ecosystem and Tarangire becomes a quieter, greener destination best suited to birdwatching.
